FAQs

How much meat do I actually get from a whole lamb?

Although we aim to supply on average a minimum of 20kg whole lamb, due to seasonal conditions the lamb we provide may be smaller. In these circumstances we will always make it up with extra cuts to you in the way of our optional extras such as our 100% lamb sausages, mince etc so that you will always receive the minimum as per the processing tag.

Our goal is to always provide a heavier lamb. We don’t charge for the extra weight no matter how heavy it may end up.

What is the weight of the meat calculated on?

After our stock is processed at the abattoir each one is weighed and assigned a tag. This is the weight we apply our prices to. We will let you know what your meat cuts weighed as per this tag on delivery.

I paid for a minimum 20kg lamb and the one delivered is less when I weighed it.

We use the tag processors assign to each individual carcass after processing, we keep records and advise all our customers of their purchases with regards to this. Keep in mind the weight also includes all the trim and bones, not just the ‘edibile’ cuts. Depending on how you requested yours to be supplied will have an effect on the weight you actually receive.
During the butchering stage there will always be a percentage of waste depending on the carcass that we cannot calculate, this is unavoidable.

What happens if I’m not happy with the quality of my meat?

At M.G.F Meats we directly oversee ALL aspects of our business. If for ANY reason you are not 100% satisfied with the meat quality after cooking your first meal, we ask that you contact us immediately, with the reasons why and our family will personally liaise with you to ensure any issues are rectified.
(please see our terms and conditions)

How much freezer space will I need?

(we need to calculate space)

How big is a whole, half or ¼ cow?

As a general guide the carcass weight of our whole Angus Yearling cows are approx. 200-250kgs, our half Angus Yearling Cows are approx. 100-125kgs and our 1/4 Angus Yearling cows are approx. 50-75kgs.

Why isn’t your beef a set price like your lambs?

Beef is a little harder to assign a set price due to the large varying weights of each individual cow, our aim is still to provide not just the best possible value but also exceptional quality to our customers.

How do I store my meat and what is the shelf life?

We recommend keeping out what you would use in the following week & freezing the rest immediately @ or below -18 degrees Celsius. Lamb will last about 2 weeks from the packaging date in our cryo vac bags & beef will last about 3 weeks.
It can last longer depending on the cut ( those with bones will expire quicker ) however the sooner it’s frozen will help lock in the freshness and prolong its shelf life.

Lamb will last approx 4-6 months in the freezer.

Beef will last approx 6-9 months

Note that it will always be safe to eat red meat if kept below -18 degrees, it is only the quality, taste etc that begins to degrade over time.
Finally, please double check the cryovac bags to ensure they are airtight. Sometimes during handling and transport the bones can pierce the bag, they may just need some extra wrapping prior to freezing.

Can I just buy smaller amounts?

No. At this stage of our business, we are trying to drive down the cost of living through bulk sales. We encourage families, friends, neighbours and anyone wanting to save money to band together in a bid to save money.

How is the meat packaged when I receive it?

All our meat is cryovac sealed and labelled in heavy duty bags.

NOTE: Sometimes during packaging the bones can pierce even the heavy duty bags, while we make every attempt to avoid this please check all your bags have a good seal when transferring them to your freezer and adjust the packaging if required.

Can you package it into smaller portions?

Yes, there may be additional costs for this. Please contact us prior to ordering to discuss your needs and we will give you a price.

I have a specific cut I would like, can you do it?

Yes! Give us a cal,l or get in contact any way you prefer to discuss your needs.

Are your products gluten/allergy free?

Most of our products are gluten-free, however, our processing facilities are used for food preparation that would be deemed allergens for some people.

I have dietary requirements, can you make products to suit me?

Yes! We make sausages, mince and all sorts of products to suit anyone with certain dietary needs. Whether they are an allergy or lifestyle choice get in contact with us and we will do our best to help.

I’m a vegetarian or vegan, do you have anything for me?

Sorry folks, we do respect your culinary & lifestyle choices but we cannot accommodate you at this stage. As our small business grows, who know’s where it will lead in the future. We are taking one step at a time and never say never!

I want to buy beef but the website won’t take my payment.

Our beef is different to our lamb’s set price. We sell beef at a per kilo rate. The price is still determined by weight from the processor’s tag. Once you have placed an order for a whole, half or ¼ cow we will take a deposit from you to secure your order. We will notify you of the final price once your cow has been processed.
